Roy Of The Rovers Gets Off The Bench As Mobile Comic
(PaidContent, 21/5/08): Now that’s what I call a long tail. Roy Of The Rovers, the boy’s comic strip about a wholesome footballer that started in 1954, is being added to the line-up of ROK Comics, the ROK Entertainment unit that offers short comic strips on mobile phones. Rok has worked with Roy’s publisher Egmont to get the strip, which has also been running on Setanta Sports’ website since October. Roy started in ‘54 in the Tiger magazine and eventually graduated to a regular slot in the Today newspaper. Rok also has Garfield and Doonesbury.

(Ericsson Mobility World, 29/1/08): Printed comic books are in decline in most of the world, but new made-for-mobile comic strips are breathing life into this once-iconic art form. At the same time, operators are getting the chance to bring a new entertainment product to their subscribers. While the Japanese form of comic books, known as manga, have been popular in the mobile space for quite some time, the rest of the world is just now starting to catch on. ROK Comics in the UK is making comics strips such as Garfield, Doonesbury and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles available for download to mobile phones while also providing them on tailored WAP sites for operators around the world.
